Four games into what was shaping up to be an exciting match, Ana Ivanovic was forced to retire with a foot injury. Kim Clijsters was serving with the advantage in the fourth game when Ivanovic walked off the court and called for a trainer. She received treatment on her foot and returned to the court. Ivanovic tied the game back up but Clijsters aced her on the next serve and Ivanovic retired.

Official word is that Ivanovic has a left foot injury.

Clijsters, the No. 4 seed, will meet the No. 10 seed Maria Sharapova in the final. Sharapova outlasted fellow Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to advance to the finals in her first Cincinnati appearance.
