The Morning Line by Betsy Ross - August 13, 2012

Good morning, and welcome to Monday at the Western & Southern Open! It should be an exciting day of tennis as the main draw kicks off with some big names for both the men and women’s draw, and it’s Military Appreciation Night here at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. First, to the action on the court. Here are some of the players to watch:

On the men’s side, stadium play starts with Alexandr Dolgopolov facing former World Number 3 Nikolay Davydenko. Last Sunday Dolgopolov won his second career ATP World Tour title in Washington, but Davydenko won the previous meeting between the two last April in Barcelona.  The second match pairs wild card Brian Baker making his main draw debut against Number 15 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber.

In the night session wild card and former W&S finalist Lleyton Hewitt goes against Mikhail Youzhny. Hewitt is 26-9 lifetime at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, reaching the final in 2002 and 2004 and the semi-finals three other times.

On the women’s side, center court action opens with Shahar Peer against Julia Goerges. It’s Peer’s fifth appearance in Cincinnati, reaching the quarterfinals in 2005 in her tournament debut. It’s the second trip to the W&S for Goerges, who lost in the first round in her debut in 2011. Later on center court it’s former W&S champion and last year’s runner-up Jelena Jankovic against Peng Shuai. Jankovic won the title here in 2009 and reached the quarterfinals in 2005 and 2006. It’s Peng’s fourth appearance at the W&S.

Other featured matchups for Monday include wild card Camila Giorgi against 2010 French Open winner Francesca Schiavone on the Grandstand Court and qualifier Akgul Amanmuradova facing Dominika Cibulkova on Court 3.

As we mentioned, Monday night is Military Appreciation Night as the Western & Southern Open honors members of the Armed Forces with a special night starting at 7 p.m., with 200 tickets donated to the Armed Forces Ticket Association. All members of the military who show an ID at the Ticket Office the day of the event will receive a half price ticket (one ticket per ID). There will be recognition of all current and former members of the armed forces who are in attendance before the matches.
