Levine Leads American Men into Main Draw as Qualifier

By Benjamin Snyder

On a day in which qualifying action will finish and Americans James Blake and Ryan Harrison are set to play the first two matches of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 main draw, Jesse Levine earned one of seven qualifying spots to join his compatriots in the main tournament with a win over Olivier Rochus of Belgium in straight sets.

Levine, who comes into this event as the World No. 87, has enjoyed some of his best results in major events this year by advancing to the second round of both Roland Garros and Wimbledon earlier this year. On Saturday, he secured an upset over the No. 4 seed Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The other American to advance to round two, Rajeev Ram, didn’t fare as well. The World No. 98 lost to France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu in straight sets on Center Court. On Saturday, Ram had scored the biggest upset of the men’s qualifying tournament by defeating the No. 3 seed Grigor Dimitrov in round one.

In other results from the qualifying tournament, the No. 2 seed Alejandro Falla of Columbia succumbed to Yen-Hsun Lu, the No. 10 seed in straight sets. No. 6 seed Marinko Matosevic claimed a spot into the main draw with a win over Jerzy Janowicz of Poland, while Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine defeated Leonardo Mayer of Argentina 7-5, 6-4.
