Djokovic Continues Quest for 'Career Golden Masters'

August 15, 2013 07:51 PM
Novak Djokovic plays to become the first man to own a Career Golden Masters.
No. 1 Novak Djokovic will face American John Isner as he attempts to enter the record books yet another time.

The Serbian World No. 1 comes into the tournament with 2013 titles from Melbourne, Monte Carlo, and Dubai and is on a quest to win his first title in Cincinnati, the only one of nine Masters 1000 trophies he does not own. A title victory here would give Djokovic something no other ATP player has achieved: a Career Golden Masters, achieved by winning all nine Masters Series events.

Other quarterfinal men’s match-ups include Juan Martin del Potro playing qualifier Dmitry Tursunov, and Andy Murray playing Tomas Berdych in an attempt to get a few more rounds of competitive play under his belt before heading to New York to defend his U.S. Open title.

World No. 2 Victoria Azarenka faces Caroline Wozniacki for the first time since 2011. "Well, I think it's a great opportunity to kind of play against each other," said Azarenka, "to see the difference [from] what we had two years ago."

Italian Roberta Vinci, the 12th seed, will face 14th seed Jelena Jankovic in the quarterfinals. Li Na advances to the semifinals with a walkover after Agnieszka Radwanska withdrew from the tournament for personal reasons.

In men’s doubles quarterfinals, Poland’s Fyrstenberg and Matkowski will face No. 2 seeds Granollers and Lopez while No. 4 Paes and Stepanek will battle against No. 8 Bopanna and Roger-Vasselin. Top seeds Mike and Bob Bryan will face compatriots James Blake and Steve Johnson.

In women’s doubles semifinals, Goerges and Zahlavova Strycova – the team that upset the top seeds Errani and Vinci – take on eighth seeds Groenefeld and Peschke. The other match will be between the Russian team of Makarova and Vesnina against Hsieh and Peng.
