Around The Grounds: The Center Court Rookwood Cup

The Center Court Rookwood Cup
By Betsy M. Ross

It’s the start of an exciting weekend of tennis here at the Western & Southern Open, and we hope you’ve made plans to be here at least for one session. Of course, Sunday will be the day the 2012 Western & Southern Open champions are crowned, and this year’s championship Sunday will have a new look for a couple of reasons.

First, the iconic Rookwood trophy has a new look and a new name: The Center Court  Rookwood Cup. It’s the third consecutive year that Rookwood has created the player trophies, but the first year that Rookwood has had naming rights. All the tropies, the perpetual trophies and the smaller player trophies, are handcrafted at the Rookwood studios in the Over-the-Rhine section of Cincinnati.

What makes it special is that Rookwood Pottery goes back more than a century in Cincinnati history. Rookwood items, including tile, pottery, architectural installations and the like are valued pieces of work here, and throughout the world. And now the Western & Southern Open Center Court Rookwood Cup joins the long line of treasured pieces from Rookwood Pottery.

Also on Sunday, after the title matches, wander over to the Champions Balcony just off the players’ area in the Player Center. This is the first year that the winners will appear, right after their championship matches, to show off their trophies to their fans. It’s an exciting addition to the traditions of the Western & Southern Open, so make sure you’re there to applaud the new champions right after they’ve won!
