Hanley & Ullyett Survive

Fifth seeds Paul Hanley and Kevin Ullyett survived a major scare in their opening match of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters, using their experience and match toughness to defeat Amer Delic and John Isner 7-6(5), 3-6, 11-9 (Match TB) win. Early on Hanley unleashed on several blistering backhands and Ullyett was fast and deadly at the net.

The young Americans did offer resistance, recovering from dropping Isner's serve in the first game of the match to get back on serve. Later in the set Delic fired up his big serve to save three consecutive break points at 5-5, 15/40.

In the second set the Americans broke Hanley to go ahead 3-2 on the deciding point when Ullyett elected to leave Isner's droopy backhand return, only to see it fall flush on the baseline. Hanley also dropped serve to lose the second set, again on a deciding point.

In the Match TB Delic served an ace wide to the Ullyett forehand to bring up match point at 9/8, but Hanley put in two big serves to seize the initiative, and, one point later, the match.

Montreal champion Mahesh Bhupathi and British partner Jamie Murray set up a Thursday night center court showdown with Bob and Mike Bryan after defeating Juan Monaco and Todd Perry 7-6(1), 6-7(5), 10-3 (Match TB). Bhupathi last week teamed with Czech Pavel Vizner to take out the Bryans in the Rogers Masters semifinals after saving two match points.

Polish duo Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski defeated Frantisek Cermak and Jarkko Nieminen 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 (Match TB) to set up a second-round meeting with third seeds Mark Knowles and Daniel Nestor.
