Former champion Carlos Moya faces a tough opening to his 2007 Western & Southern Financial Group Masters campaign Monday when he plays 2005 Tennis Masters Cup champion David Nalbandian. Moya, who won the Cincinnati title in 2002, trails Nalbandian 2-3 in career meetings and lost their most recent match in Barcelona earlier this year.
Former World No. 1 Moya, who won his 20th career title in Umag two starts ago, lost in the first round of the Rogers Masters in Montreal to Marcos Baghdatis. But the Spaniard knows his way around US hard courts, having been to the finals of three of the four North American hard court Masters Series tournaments (including Miami in 2003 and Indian Wells in 1999).
Nalbandian, who has reached the semifinals of all four Grand Slam tournaments, including a run to the 2002 Wimbledon final, is looking to jumpstart his 2007 season this week in Cincinnati. The Argentine has endured a lean season by his high standards, having reached just one ATP quarterfinal in Barcelona.
Veteran Briton Tim Henman will make his 12th consecutive appearance in Cincinnati when he kicks off the center court program at 11 a.m. against Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela. Henman, who needed a wild card into the main draw because his ATP Ranking has slipped to No. 85, reached the Cincinnati final in 2000 and the semifinals in 2001.
Also in action Monday is former World No. 1 Marat Safin and big-serving American youngsters John Isner and Sam Querrey.
